Shared antenatal care

Shared Care is a popular choice for women who are healthy with a normal pregnancy. In choosing Shared Care:

  • you have most of your care close to your home or work
  • see the same doctor who gets to know you and your baby
  • build a relationship with your doctor and continue to see them after your baby is born
  • have fewer hospital visits

At our centre, doctors who specialise in shared antenatal care provide care including education, communication, managing results, and abnormal findings in conjunction with a local hospital for low risk antenatal patients. Once the pregnancy is confirmed a referral should be sent by the doctor to the hospital clearly showing the intention to share care. An antenatal appointment will then be required to be made direct with the hospital.

Your antenatal consults will alternate from then on between your local doctor and the hospital. Your doctor will advise you how often you should attend for appointments and as the delivery date becomes closer, these visits will become more frequent. Generally, from 36 weeks onwards all your antenatal consults will be at the hospital.

Postnatal check-ups at 6 - 8 weeks can be offered by your local doctor at our medical centre.
